The rhythm: past, present, and future

Individual Work, 2024-2025

The Rhythm: Past, Present, and Future explores the Chinese bowl as a symbol of care, continuity, and cultural memory. This installation features three hand-etched plexiglass bowls, each representing a different moment in time. The Past Bowl reflects my mother’s childhood hardships and the lessons passed down through daily routines. The Present Bowl was inspired by nostalgic objects in Chinatown, showing how traditions evolve yet remain rooted. The Future Bowl envisions unfolding possibilities, with a symbolic door and Cantonese tonal marks linking past and future. A fade-in, fade-out light effect mimics the shifting nature of memory, creating a rhythmic dialogue between generations. The transparency of plexiglass allows light to pass through, layering the past, present, and future together. Through this piece, I explore how culture is not static but constantly shifting, shaped by both personal and collective experiences.
